10 Ways To Help Your Body Detox
March 7, 2025

In today’s modern world, our bodies are being constantly bombarded with various toxins. They are everywhere! In our food, air, water, and especially in our home and beauty products. As a result, the body’s natural detoxification processes can become overwhelmed, compromising our immune systems built to keep us healthy and disease free. Detoxification is essential to maintain optimal health and to ensure that your organs, particularly the liver, kidneys, and lymphatic system, function at their best. So how can we protect this vital part of our health?

While there are numerous detox programs and cleanses available (I should know, because I have tried many of them), but the most effective way to help your body detox is through consistent lifestyle choices. It is not the sexy answer, but it is the best answer. Below are my top ten ways to naturally support your body’s immune system and to help it detoxify itself.

1. INCREASE QUALITY SLEEP

Sleep is often overlooked as a powerful tool of detoxification. While sleeping, the body engages in essential repair and cleansing. One of these is the activation of the glymphatic system, which is responsible for clearing waste from the brain. Inadequate sleep can interfere with these processes, leading to the accumulation of toxins and waste products in the body, including the brain. I don’t know about you; but I need all the help I can get with my brain!

Additionally, sleep is when the liver and kidneys work most efficiently to filter out toxins from the bloodstream. A good night’s rest allows the body to regenerate and heal itself. Adults should aim for 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night to provide the body with the necessary time to repair and detoxify.

To improve your sleep quality, consider establishing a relaxing bedtime routine, minimizing screen time before bed, and maintaining a regular sleep schedule. Here is a link to an article on PM Essentials and some of the things that have helped me build good nightime habits.

2. INCREASE YOUR WATER INTAKE

Water is the body’s primary method of flushing out waste and toxins. Drinking an adequate amount of water supports kidney function and helps maintain the balance of bodily fluids. Water helps to flush out toxins through the urinary tract, skin (via sweat), and digestive system, promoting overall detoxification.

A common recommendation is to drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day, but individual needs may vary based on factors such as body size, activity level, and environmental conditions. To optimize your detox efforts, it’s important to drink clean, filtered water to avoid adding any additional toxins in the body. You can also boost hydration with herbal teas, and adding lemon or cucumber to your water can provide extra detoxifying benefits.

3. INCREASE LYMPH MOVEMENT

The lymphatic system plays a crucial role in detoxification by carrying toxins away from the body’s cells and filtering them through lymph nodes. Unlike the circulatory system, the lymphatic system does not have a pump, meaning it relies on our body’s movement to circulate and remove waste from the body.

Regular exercise, such as walking, stretching, and rebounding can stimulate the lymphatic system and help improve detoxification. In addition to physical activity, deep breathing exercises can promote lymph flow by helping to expand and contract the diaphragm, which stimulates lymphatic circulation. Massage and regular dry brushing are other great ways to help increase lymph movement and boost detoxification.

4. INCREASE GUT HEALTH

The gut is at the center of your body’s immune system and detoxification process. A healthy gut is vital for breaking down food, absorbing nutrients, and eliminating waste products. However, when the gut microbiome is out of balance due to poor diet, antibiotics and other medications, stress, or exposure to toxins, the body can struggle to detoxify effectively.

To support gut health, focus on eating a balanced diet rich in fiber, fermented foods, and prebiotic and probiotic-rich foods that promote a healthy gut microbiome. Fiber from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains helps to move waste through the digestive system, while probiotics from foods like yogurt, kimchi, and sauerkraut introduce beneficial bacteria that help maintain gut balance. Avoiding processed foods, excess sugar, and artificial flavors and “natural flavors” will also support a healthier gut lining, reducing inflammation and preventing the accumulation of harmful toxins. Talk to your functional health provider about doing a gut health test to see if your biome needs to be adjusted or better supported.

5. INCREASE NUTRITION

A nutrient-rich diet supports the body’s detoxification processes by providing essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that help neutralize toxins. Nutrient-dense foods are also vital for supporting organs involved in detox, such as the liver and kidneys.

Foods high in antioxidants—such as berries, dark leafy greens, and cruciferous vegetables—help protect the body from oxidative stress and free radical damage. Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, and kale contain compounds that promote liver detoxification by increasing the production of enzymes that aid in detoxifying harmful substances. Incorporating healthy fats, such as omega-3 fatty acids from fatty fish or flaxseeds, can further support the body’s ability to eliminate toxins.

Additionally, certain foods like garlic, cilantro, and turmeric have natural detoxifying properties and can help boost liver function, improve digestion, and reduce inflammation. A well-rounded, nutrient-dense diet can play a significant role in enhancing the body’s ability to naturally detoxify.

6. DECREASE ALL SYNTHETIC FRAGRANCE OR NATURAL FLAVORS

Any time you see the word “fragrance” or “natural flavor” on a label it is code for over 3,0000 synthetic chemicals that product companies don’t have to identify by name. These chemicals are known endocrine disruptors and create systemic strain on the immune system. Most common household and personal care products contain synthetic fragrances and natural flavors that can be harmful to the body. These ingredients, often found in cleaning supplies, air fresheners, candles, and cosmetics, contain chemicals such as phthalates and parabens, which have been linked to endocrine disruption and toxicity.

There are so many good brands offering great healthy products, but don’t be tricked by the words “clean” or “non-toxic”. Many are not. You must learn to read the labels or run them through consumer apps that can interpret the label for you. Choose products that are fragrance-free or are scented with organic essential oils. Look for products labeled “phthalate-free” and “paraben-free.” Additionally, read ingredient labels carefully when purchasing foods and beverages to avoid hidden chemical additives like artificial flavors, chemical dyes, sweeteners and preservatives.

7. DECREASE STRESS

Chronic stress is one of the most detrimental factors to overall health and detoxification. Stress triggers the production of cortisol, a hormone that can elevate blood sugar levels, suppress the immune system, and interfere with digestion. Over time, high levels of stress can lead to the accumulation of toxins in the body due to imbalanced hormone levels and impaired detoxification pathways.

Practices like mindfulness, prayer and meditation, gentle exercising and walking, deep breathing, and journaling can help reduce stress levels and support your body’s natural detox process. Taking time to relax and unwind can improve your sleep quality, reduce inflammation, and promote a healthier immune system.

Use a journal or a biometric tracker to become more aware of stress cycles. I encourage you to also reflect on your life rhythms and relationships and consider what changes might need to be made to lower any chronic stress. We become the sum of our 5 closest relationships, so working toward healthy connections and boundaries is worth the investment and your body will thank you!

8. DECREASE PROCESSED SUGAR AND SEED OILS FROM DIET

Processed sugar and seed oils, such as soybean, canola, corn, and sunflower oils, are common ingredients in modern diets but can be detrimental to detoxification. High sugar intake leads to insulin resistance and inflammation, while seed oils contain omega-6 fatty acids that can disrupt the balance of omega-3s in the body, promoting inflammation and oxidative stress.

To support your body’s detox processes, consider eliminating or drastically reducing your consumption of processed sugar and seed oils. Instead, focus on whole foods that are naturally low in sugar, such as fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins. Replace seed oils with healthier alternatives like olive oil, avocado oil, or coconut oil, which contain heart-healthy fats and have anti-inflammatory properties.

9. DECREASE TOXIC BEAUTY PRODUCTS

Many beauty products, including makeup, lotions, shampoos, and deodorants, contain harmful chemicals such as fragrance, parabens, phthalates, and sulfates, which can accumulate in the body and negatively affect health. These chemicals can disrupt hormonal balance, contribute to skin irritation, and burden the liver, which is responsible for processing these substances.

Switching to truly non-toxic, clean beauty products can help reduce exposure to harmful chemicals. Look for brands that are free from parabens, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances, and opt for products that contain natural ingredients such as plant oils, aloe vera, and herbal extracts. Here are a few of my favorite brands.

10. DECREASE EMFs (Electromagnetic Fields)

Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are emitted from electronic devices such as smartphones, Wi-Fi routers, and microwaves. While more research is needed, prolonged exposure to EMFs may contribute to oxidative stress and disrupt cellular function, which could impact the body’s detoxification processes.

I have been working on reducing my own exposure to EMFs by limiting screen time, turning off electronics when not in use, and using speakerphone or wired headphones instead of holding my phone to my ear. I have also invested in a few EMF-blocking devices that help shield my body from harmful radiation. Here are few of my faves.

None of us want a devastating diagnosis or to develop an autoimmune condition. Detoxifying the body and supporting our own God-given immune system is our best insurance policy. It involves a multi-faceted approach, focusing on lifestyle changes that encourage the body to remove harmful toxins and restore balance. By incorporating practices like improving sleep, increasing hydration, supporting gut health, and eliminating toxins from the environment, you can support your body’s natural detoxification process and enhance overall well-being.
