Proper hydration is one of the most important pillars of good health, affecting everything from digestion to mental clarity and skin health. I would love to share some ways I have up-leveled my water intake over the last year; from electrolyte balance to choosing the right vessels and ideal temperature for optimizing metabolism. Whether you’re aiming for optimal hydration or integrating healthy alternatives like bone broth and hydrogen water, this guide will help you elevate your hydration game.
WHY DOES HYDRATION MATTER?
Water is vital for maintaining numerous functions in the body. It supports digestion by aiding the breakdown of food and nutrient absorption, helps transport nutrients to cells, and regulates body temperature through sweating and breathing. Adequate hydration also helps maintain blood circulation and joint lubrication, making it essential for overall bodily function.
Dehydration, even in mild forms, can significantly impact health. Symptoms of chronic dehydration include fatigue, headaches, dry skin, and digestive issues like constipation. Over time, dehydration can lead to more serious conditions such as impaired kidney function, cognitive decline, and metabolic slowdown. Long-term lack of sufficient water intake can strain the kidneys, affecting their ability to filter waste from the body leading to a compromised immune system.
THE POWER OF ELECTROLYTES
Electrolytes are essential minerals, such as sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium, that help regulate water balance and cellular function in the body. They are vital for maintaining hydration, supporting nerve and muscle function, and balancing the body’s pH levels. An electrolyte imbalance can cause symptoms like muscle cramps, fatigue, dizziness, and even confusion.
I start every day with a simple electrolyte replacement: 12oz of filtered water, the juice of half an organic lemon and ¼ tsp of high-quality mineralized salt. Here are few other simple and natural sources of electrolytes. Bananas are a great source of potassium, leafy greens like spinach provide magnesium, dairy products offer calcium and coconut water, is rich in potassium and magnesium.
MY FAVORITE VESSELS
When choosing the best vessels for drinking water consider glass or metal over plastic. Plastic bottles often contain harmful chemicals, like BPA, which can leach into water, especially when exposed to heat or prolonged use. These toxins have been linked to various health issues, including hormone disruption.
Glass is neutral and non-reactive, meaning it doesn’t alter the taste of water. I love drinking my coffee from glass! Stainless steel, especially in insulated bottles, is a great alternative for those seeking durability and temperature control. These bottles keep water cool for hours and are less prone to breaking compared to glass. Here are a few of my favorites.
THE ANCIENT WISDOM OF COPPER VESSELS
Drinking water from copper vessels is rooted in ancient healing traditions. Copper has natural antimicrobial properties, which can help purify water by eliminating harmful bacteria and pathogens. Additionally, copper is thought to aid in digestion and detoxification by stimulating the production of digestive enzymes and helping the body flush out toxins. Scientifically, copper is an essential trace mineral that plays a role in various bodily functions, including boosting the immune system and supporting cellular health. However, it’s important to use well-made copper vessels that are properly lined. For optimal benefits, water should be stored in a copper vessel for about 8-12 hours, allowing time for the copper to infuse the water with its beneficial properties. Please follow safety guidelines to ensure the benefits and minimize potential risks.
FILTERING WATER 101
Filtering water is crucial for removing harmful contaminants that may be present in tap water. Common pollutants include chlorine, fluoride, lead, and various industrial chemicals, which can pose serious health risks. For instance, long-term exposure to chlorine and fluoride may contribute to cancer risks and hormone disruption, while lead can cause developmental issues in children. To protect your family’s health, a water filtration system can help eliminate these toxins, ensuring clean and safe drinking water.
THE RISE OF HYDROGEN WATER
I splurged on a hydrogen bottle for Christmas this year and have loved adding this into our daily health regimen. It is too soon to give a personal testimony, but the research looks sound. What is hydrogen water? Hydrogen water is water infused with molecular hydrogen (H2), which is believed to offer various health benefits due to its antioxidant properties. This form of water is thought to help reduce inflammation, enhance energy levels, and improve skin health by neutralizing harmful free radicals in the body. The potential benefits of hydrogen water are linked to its ability to promote cellular health and support overall well-being. These at-home generators are designed to provide a cost-effective and convenient way to enjoy the benefits of hydrogen water daily. As interest in hydrogen water grows, many individuals are turning to this new trend as part of a wellness-focused lifestyle.
IDEAL WATER TEMPERATURE
Drinking cold water in the morning is an effective way to kickstart your day. It helps boost the metabolism, energizing the body and mind after a night’s sleep. Cold water stimulates circulation, enhancing alertness and making you feel more awake and focused. In contrast, warm water in the evening offers its own set of benefits.
Drinking warm water helps with digestion by soothing the digestive system. It also supports detoxification by aiding in the elimination of waste and toxins. Additionally, warm water has a calming effect, helping to relax the body and mind before bedtime. By drinking cold water in the morning and warm water in the evening, you can align hydration with your body’s natural rhythms, maximizing both energy levels during the day and relaxation at night. I always end the day with nice cup of sleepy time tea. Here are a few tea drinks that can be drank either iced or hot.
DRINK YOUR GREENS!
Drinking greens is a newer habit for me, but I have come to really enjoy this daily supplement routine. Adding greens to your water is an easy and powerful way to enhance hydration and support detoxification. Ingredients like spirulina, chlorophyll, and wheatgrass are highly alkalizing, helping balance the body’s pH and improve overall health. These green additions are packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, which boost your immune system, support digestion, and promote skin health. To incorporate greens into your water, you can simply add a teaspoon of green powder, such as spirulina or wheatgrass, to a glass of water. Alternatively, you can infuse water with fresh greens, such as a few leaves of spinach or mint, and let it sit for a few hours for added nutrients. Cold press juicing is another way to pack a lot of nutrients into a glass of liquid. For maximum benefits, it’s ideal to drink green water first thing in the morning to kickstart your metabolism or in the afternoon to boost energy and help detoxify.
PROTEIN PACKED WATER
Bone broth is a protein-packed beverage that offers a range of health benefits. It has a high content of collagen, gelatin, and amino acids. These nutrients support joint health by providing essential building blocks for cartilage, enhance skin elasticity by improving collagen production, and promote gut health by soothing the digestive tract. Bone broth is also rich in minerals like calcium and magnesium, which help support bones and overall vitality. Integrating bone broth into your hydration routine can be an excellent alternative to sugary drinks or unhealthy snacks. Sipping on warm bone broth throughout the day not only nourishes your body but also helps curb cravings. You can make bone broth at home by simmering animal bones for several hours or choose high-quality pre-made options. I have listed a few good ones below.
HEALTHY SODA ALTERNATIVES
Soda, especially sugary and diet versions, can pose significant health risks. The high sugar and chemical content in regular and diet sodas lead to sugar crashes, weight gain, and long-term metabolic issues like insulin resistance and diabetes. Diet sodas, while low in calories, often contain artificial sweeteners and other harmful additives that can disrupt your metabolism and increase cravings for sweet foods. To break free from the soda habit, consider healthier alternatives. Sparkling water, flavored with only natural ingredients like real fruit essence or juice, offers a refreshing, low calorie option with no added sugar. I have started to create nightly “mocktails” with these tasty alternatives. It has helped limit both my sugar and alcohol consumption.
So, here’s to more water in our life! By implementing some of these strategies – you’ll be well on your way to better health, increased energy, and overall wellness. A better metabolism doesn’t hurt either. Let’s all commit to being more intentional to hydrate and support one our body’s biggest detoxing pathways. Water really is the best medicine. Cheers!
