Stepping Up Your Steps
February 7, 2025

Walking is one of the simplest and most accessible forms of exercise that offers an array of health benefits. Whether you’re walking to stay active, boost your mood, or manage your weight, it’s a low-impact activity that can be easily incorporated into your daily routine. But to make the most of your walks, it’s important to have the right gear and approach. In this article, we’ll explore the numerous health benefits of walking, how many steps you need to take to see results, and gear recommendations to enhance your walking experience, whether in cold or warm weather, plus tips for protecting your skin and safety.

The Many Health Benefits of Walking

Walking might seem simple, but its health benefits are profound. Some of the key advantages include:

  • Improved Cardiovascular Health. Walking increases heart rate, improves circulation, and reduces the risk of heart disease. Even a short brisk walk for 30 minutes a day can help lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol, and enhance heart function.
  • Weight Management. Walking burns calories, which aids in weight loss or maintaining a healthy weight. A brisk walk can burn approximately 100 calories per 30 minutes, depending on your speed and weight.
  • Better Mental Health. Walking has a powerful impact on mental well-being. It can reduce anxiety, depression, and stress. The rhythmic nature of walking, combined with time spent outdoors, promotes the release of endorphins and serotonin, helping to improve mood.
  • Improved Mobility and Flexibility. Regular walking strengthens muscles, joints, and bones, reducing the risk of osteoporosis and improving flexibility. This is especially beneficial as we age to maintain mobility.
  • Reduced Risk of Chronic Diseases. Walking can help prevent or manage conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, arthritis, and even some cancers. It enhances insulin sensitivity and reduces inflammation.

How Many Steps To Make A Difference?

While there’s no magic number that guarantees results, most health experts recommend aiming for around 10,000 steps a day. This is roughly equivalent to 5 miles (8 km) and is a commonly cited goal for improving cardiovascular health, boosting fitness, and maintaining a healthy weight.

However, even if you can’t reach 10,000 steps, any increase in physical activity will make a difference. For beginners, starting with 5,000 to 7,000 steps daily can lead to noticeable improvements in energy, mood, and overall health. The key is consistency—gradually building up to higher step counts and staying active throughout the day. I love doubling the impact of my time by both exercising and listening to a good story, an interesting podcast, praying of listening to music.

Protect Your Feet

Proper footwear is essential for a comfortable and injury-free walk. Walking shoes should offer support, cushioning, and fit well. If you are walking or jogging daily, especially if on hard surfaces, consider investing in two different quality shoes. Alternating shoes will help lower risk of injury, by creating less repetitive stress on your joints. Consider going to a running store to have them analyze your stride. It will help you select the perfect shoe. Here’s what to look for in a good pair of walking shoes:

  • Arch Support. Good arch support is crucial for comfort and avoiding strain on your feet, knees, and lower back.
  • Cushioning. Walking can be a high-impact activity, so adequate cushioning helps absorb shock and reduces stress on joints.
  • Fit. Shoes that are too tight or too loose can cause blisters or discomfort. Aim for a snug fit with enough room for your toes to move.
  • Breathability. Shoes with breathable materials will help keep your feet cool and dry, preventing moisture buildup and reducing the risk of blisters or fungal infections.

Gearing Up for Cold Weather

It was my personal goal to keep walking outside during the winter months. I have never done that consistently, but was finding myself getting a little blue. I realized I was missing the fresh air and destressing aspect of being in nature. So I decided I was going to do my best to walk outside as many days as possible this year. I have found it has made a big difference in my mental outlook. The winters can be a hard time for people living in the north. This has helped me combat those winter blues. Here are some of the things that has made walking outside bearable.

Gearing Up for Warm Weather

When walking in warm weather, it’s essential to stay cool, protected and hydrated. If you are in a very warm climate, you may want to invest moisture wicking or UV protective clothing. Covering your head with a hat or visor also helps keep the sun off your face.

Make sure you dry out your shoes daily as to not get blisters or foot issues. Always carry a water bottle to stay hydrated, especially in the heat. Consider a lightweight, reusable bottle that you can easily carry on longer walks. Belts and water bottle bags help keep you hands free.

Gearing Up for Safety

Safety should be a priority, especially when walking in the early morning or at dusk when driver visibility is low. Choose clothing with bright colors and be sure to where some reflective strips during low light times. If you are walking in rugged areas or uneven terrain, a walking stick can help stabilize you. It is important to be aware of your surroundings, especially if you’re wearing listening devices. If you ever feel threatened it is good to have a sound alarm or pepper spray/mace.

Protect your skin

Spending time outdoors means your skin is exposed to the elements. Help keep your skin protected by using sunscreen if you are out for a long walk during peak hours. I always love having a good Chapstick in my pocket during my walks. I have friends who are runners who also swear by their anti-chaffing balm for hot days or long runs. Dry shampoo also comes in handy on those days you don’t have time to wash hair after a good walk. It is nice having a quick and easy way to freshen up and keep going!

Up Level by Adding Weight

Walking with added weight can increase the intensity of your walk and provide additional benefits. For those wanting to lose weight, you can increase your calorie burn by increasing the intensity of your walk with weights. Same distance walked, but more calories burned! It can also strengthen muscles by engaging your core and upper body muscles. Weight-bearing exercise, even with light weights, can increase bone density and enhance bone health. We all need simple ways to combat osteoporosis as we age. A weighted walk also challenges your heart and lungs more, improving cardiovascular fitness.

If you’re considering adding weights, start with a small amount (like ankle weights or a weighted vest) and gradually increase the load as your fitness improves. Be mindful of your posture to avoid strain or injury.

Way to Help Stretch Afterwards

To help reduce injury or keep from developing conditions like Plantar Fasciitis, it is really important to stretch good after a long walk. Here are a few things that have really helped me stay healthy and to keep sore feet at bay.

Walking is an incredibly beneficial exercise, offering both physical and mental health benefits. With the right approach and gear, you can maximize the positive effects and enjoy your walks, no matter the season. Whether you’re focusing on heart health, weight management, or just getting outside for some fresh air, walking is a simple yet powerful tool to improve overall well-being. Now let’s get to walking!
